Vít Makarius specializes in international dispute resolution, primarily in international arbitration. He has advised disputing parties in international commercial arbitrations conducted under various rules in a number of countries. Mr. Makarius has been further involved in advising clients on issues arising under investment treaties and in disputes stemming therefrom. He has also regularly advised on other matters of international law, in particular the law of treaties and fundamental rights, acting as counsel for sovereigns and private parties in international and municipal courts.

Since receiving his Ph.D. degree at Charles University in Prague in 2004, Mr. Makarius has given lectures and been published in periodicals such as International Business Law Journal (Sweet & Maxwell Thomson Reuters). He authored Arbitration Clauses in International Contracts: Prevention, Planning and Dispute Management in International Trade (C. H. Beck, 2015), a comprehensive 410-page guide through international arbitration law and practice written for the Czech and Slovak readership.

Before returning to practise law, Mr. Makarius served a four-year term as a case lawyer at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, where he worked on commercial law, civil law and regulatory matters.

Mr. Makarius has been repeatedly recognized in the arbitration chapter of “Who’s Who Legal”.

He speaks Czech, English and French, and has a working knowledge of Slovak. Mr. Makarius is attorney-at-law and member of the Czech Bar and other law associations in the Czech Republic and abroad.
